I did an internship with Teen Challenge many years ago, and I assume this Christian program is similar. I think this program is probably a very good one providing an individual doesn't have a co-occurring disorder. I spoke with individuals who are part of the Life Changers program, and the ministry doesn't believe in allowing participants to take medication for psychiatric disorders. Thus, I don't believe in pulling out my wallet and donating to any residential treatment facility, including Life Changers, that treats a mental illness any differently than an illness such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. I would recommend anyone to this program if I was sure that they weren't in need of psychiatric medication to control symptoms of bi-polar or other mental illness. I would not recommend anyone to this program if I even suspected that they might be bi-polar, etc., but, instead, I would steer them toward a treatment center where they could be assessed for such disorders and treated accordingly. I'm not thrilled with Teen Challenge, either, for the same reason. However, at least Teen Challenge allows individuals who are already currently taking such prescriptions to be able to stay on their meds once they enter their program. My life was a mess for 15 years when I didn't take psychiatric medications, and it would be a mess today(with or without Jesus Christ) if I wasn't taking them now like I have been for the past 17 years. I don't believe a person who truly has bi-polar or other mental health conditions can even function in a program(or even in life) to benefit from it unless they're on meds. Over 50 percent of drug users have some type of co-occurring disorder according to statistics. Individuals might be depressed so they use an upper to self-medicate or they might be anxious and can't sleep, etc. so they take a downer to self-medicate. They're trying to self-medicate their symptoms of mental illness using illegal drugs or alcohol rather than seeking professional help from a doctor who can properly control those symptoms through legal medications that are proven effective. I do want to commend Life Changers for steering those in the program to look to Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives, encouraging participants to freely worship Him and look to Him for change. The guys I met in the program are great.
God changed my life almost 5 years ago through this program. I attended the pigeon forge, TN center and have been staff here ever since. I would probably be dead or in prison if God hadn't intervened using this ministry!!
