My son went here when he was 12 or 13 he loved it, he said it was the best experience of his life
As a camper I had a lot of trouble with the director as well as my counselors. I didn't make any connections with other campers and was very unhappy. The director refused to let me speak with my parents telling me that I'd thank her when I was older for making me stay. It's been 9 years and I still get anxious thinking about my experience. I sat in her gocart crying for a long time and she responded by dismissing my feelings and saying her own daughter was glad she had made her stay at sleep away camp when she wanted to come home. I wasn't even asking to go home, I just wanted to be able to talk to my mom on the phone because It would make the rest of the time easier, but she would not let me. She even brought religion into our conversation which was completely innapropriate and made me feel uncomfortable in that environment.
Horrible place to work. Counsellors are great and care about the kids immensely, but the upper staff/management is awful. Would reccomend sending your kids here but only if you are okay with how the staff is treated. The counsellors who live in cabin are working 24/7. Counsellors get one period of about 17ish hours off during the week and then another 17ish hours off on Saturday afternoon-Sunday morning. Other than this, no breaks. You get one break during the day that is called free time and it is for about 45 minutes. The rest of the day you are on clock and must constantly be working/looking after the kids. Which obviously is what you should be doing but it's the fact the counsellors are overworked every. single. day. What makes this better is the counsellors are paid close to NOTHING. As a first time counsellor for the entire summer you earn about $2000. (Not to mention they lied to our years staff about a "bonus" that they didn't have enough money to give to everyone. This bonus was held over people's heads but maybe half of it was given out) Anyway, you earn about $2000 for the whole summer. That is approx. $1 an hour. Not a joke. Do the math. 12 weeks of being there, working 7 days a week, 23/24 hours a day. $1ish dollars an our. That's absolutely insane and injust. The family who owns the place are legit millionaires but can't seem to afford to pay their staff a decent wage. Yes, $1 an hour is legal and I know this because they have put up a GIANT poster in the staff lounge that talks all about why it's legal to pay camp counsellors such little money. Yes, they know they're underpaying their staff for overworking them, but they still continue to do it. Also, if you get sick while at camp, any time you have to take off for being sick they deduct that time from your pay check. So if you're in the 'health lodge' (Which is a horror story on its own) they deduct somewhere between $50-$100 from your pay check. I don't know why they deduct more from your pay check than what you would make for that time, but they do. I can't tell you the number of times my fellow counsellors worked all day long while harrowingly sick because they couldn't afford to lose that money. Kids go home from camp crazy sick all the time because of that kind of thing. (Also because crowd 200 kids in one place, they're gonna get sick!) But anyway, I'll talk about cabin life. Number one, there is 0 cell service in that place or internet. Only the staff lounge and internet cafe have wifi and it usually sucks so don't expect much. In the cabins there is nothing. No cell service, wifi, etc. That's fine because the majority of the time you need to be watching the kids. But, when it's 11 pm and all the kids are in bed and you want to be able to scroll through social media while in bed in the staff room, you can't, and that kinda sucks. Also when it's your break/free time you wanna be able to text friends from home and all that, but you can't. There's no service, ever. I think some people with AT&T got service sometimes. But anyway! Cabins! There's 16 kids to a cabin and 4 or 3 counsellors. It's pretty chill, the kids usually get really comfortable around each other so you guys can all hang out in the main room and stuff. Cabin life was pretty cool honestly! So, the food. Food was really decent for camp food. The chef is a creep and hits on the underage foreign girls that work in the kitchen but they don't do anything about it because they don't want to be sent home. So there's that. Now, the best part: management. I'm honestly kind of afraid to post about the Martin's and their director, Anna. I'm legit scared they're going to find me and sue me for defamation, but you can't sue for what's true right? They're okay. The martins like to subtly insert their opinions on religion into things at camp, and also they're craaaaazy conservative. No tank tops at all (in 95 degree MO weather? whew). And the director Anna is just kinda psychotic, woman's got anger management issues. Anyway, place is good for kids but don't expect sunshine and peaches working there.
I have never been there yet but I can not wait to go! The website looks awesome! My parents say I can go if I raise most of the money. I hope I can in time. I wonder if they have scholarships to go.
this camp was horrible for my son. not only could he not talk to me but i called twice to talk to him and all i got was "we'll pass your info along to the camp leader and let them decide if you get to talk to your son".... WOW.. then, my son comes back to tell me a kid kept fighting him and the camp staff did nothing to keep the bully away from him, even after he gave my son 2 black eyes. he also had severe heat exhaustion and passed out and all they did was send him back to the barracks. they didn't have hot showers and he sent emails to his mother but she never got them. something's VERY wrong with this camp. i wouldn't suggest sending your children here. EVER.
My bunk counselors were fighting with each other and made no effort to hide it from the campers. One of them chased a fellow camper around our cabin to try and read her diary. The camper ended up hiding and crying under her bed. When taking showers we had to walk through the common room in our towels where everyone was congregated. The food was awful as I was a vegetarian at the time and there were few appetizing options. I could not wait to go home and take off those ridiculously large name tags that we had to wear everyday whenever we left the cabins. The animals were great but the people weren't worth it.
